Our Current Mission and Vision

HONOReform is the only national advocacy organization dedicated to protecting patients through safeguarding the medical injection process. Our vision is a nation in which health care providers always follow fundamental injection safety practices that are designed to protect all patients each and every time they receive an injection.

Expansion of our Mission in 2014

Starting in 2013, Evelyn McKnight of HONOReform encouraged all stakeholders to join her to help safeguard the entire spectrum of the medical injection process—from manufacturing to disposal. This year, Evelyn encourages healthcare workers to please “speak up if you see a colleague not using safe injection practices.”

Presentations and Media

Led by co-founder and president Evelyn McKnight, who continues to present her story and the ongoing need to always use safe healthcare practices, HONOReform presented at 23 conferences in 2013 (attended by nearly 2,500 people). HONOReform responded to reported outbreaks and patient notifications in person and in print. HONOReform is active on social media, particularly Twitter (#HONOReform).

Response to Outbreak Investigations

HONOReform responded to 12 patient notifications, and three confirmed outbreaks of bloodborne pathogens caused by unsafe injection practices, in 2013. Over 20,000 Americans were affected. HONOReform provided support to these patients, specifically in North Dakota, Buffalo, New York, and throughout Oklahoma. Through messaging and direct contact, we help provide guidance to patients, providers and public health officials. At the core of our work is the emphasis on the needs of the patient.

The SIPC and the One and Only Campaign

HONOReform is a proud original member of the Safe Injection Practices Coalition, which helps provide support for the One and Only Campaign (OneandOnlyCampaign.org). The SIPC developed new materials in 2013 to continue to raise awareness among healthcare providers and patients about safe injection practices. With the support of Eli Lilly, the SIPC has begun its second phase. Please contact HONOReform and allow us to help you access the materials that will be most helpful to you and your institution.

HONOReform “Survivor Stories” Blog

Launched in 2013 by Evelyn McKnight and Lauren Lollini, the HONOReform blog (www.HONOReform.org/blog) is dedicated to a full depiction of the patient story—but it includes much more. A compendium of information on a variety of injection safety issues, HONOReform actively seeks submissions from guest bloggers.

Support for State Legislation

In recent years, HONOReform participated in discussions with lawmakers in Colorado, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada and Ohio. Starting in 2013, HONOReform engaged in vital work with representatives in New Hampshire. Working to “nationalize” much-needed pieces of state legislation related to injection safety is among HONOReform’s goals in 2014.

HONOReform Year End Appeal

We are grateful to our many donors for the ongoing support of our mission. Special thanks to Dr. Tom McKnight, whose end of year appeal, a focus on the many “love stories” that surround our work, inspired many donors to support HONOReform’s safe injection practices work. Contributions to HONOReform come in a variety of forms. Thank you all for helping us to continue to safeguard the medical injection process in the United States.

Awards

The National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases presented the Honor Award Certificate to HONOReform “for forging a novel partnership aimed at eliminating infections in healthcare settings and protecting patients.” HONOReform also received an award from the CDC “for forging a novel partnership aimed at eliminating infections in healthcare settings and protecting patients.”

Our Goals for 2014

HONOReform relies on the support of our many partner organizations. An active and engaged volunteer network, including our Board of Directors, complements the work of our Executive Director. Aims in 2014 include developing and sustaining crucial partnerships, expanding our mission and our deliverables, responding immediately to announcements of outbreaks by developing a local response and presence in the affected community, and working with industry and others to help guarantee safe healthcare.
